IQP Backflow Prevention Testing

Certified IQP inspections and backflow prevention device testing for residential and commercial properties across Hamilton and the Waikato.

What Is an IQP & Backflow Prevention?

An Independently Qualified Person (IQP) is a person registered under the New Zealand Building Act 2004 to carry out inspections on specified systems within buildings — including testable backflow prevention devices. Plumbway Ltd holds current IQP registration for backflow prevention inspection and testing.

Backflow prevention devices protect the public drinking water supply by preventing contaminated water from flowing back into the mains supply network. These devices are legally required on many commercial, industrial and multi-unit residential properties in Hamilton and across New Zealand.

Under the New Zealand Building Act and your local territorial authority requirements, testable backflow prevention devices must be inspected and tested annually by a registered IQP. Failure to maintain a current IQP inspection certificate can result in compliance notices from Waikato Council or Hamilton City Council.

Annual IQP Inspections — Your Legal Obligation

Properties with testable backflow prevention devices are required by law to have them inspected annually by a registered IQP. This includes:

  • Commercial and industrial buildings
  • Multi-unit residential complexes
  • Properties with irrigation systems connected to mains supply
  • Buildings with boilers or water treatment systems
  • Food processing and hospitality premises
  • Any property identified by your territorial authority

After each inspection, Plumbway Ltd issues a signed IQP report that you submit to your council to maintain your building’s compliance schedule. We manage the paperwork so you don’t have to.

Our IQP Backflow Testing Process

Our IQP-registered plumbers follow a thorough, standardised process for every backflow prevention inspection:

1

Site Assessment

We identify all testable backflow prevention devices on your property and review your existing compliance schedule documentation.

2

Device Testing

Each device is physically tested using calibrated test equipment to verify it is operating correctly and preventing backflow.

3

Fault Identification & Repair

If a device fails testing, we carry out on-the-spot repairs where possible, or arrange a return visit with replacement parts.

4

IQP Report & Council Submission

We complete your IQP inspection report and provide it to you for submission to Hamilton City Council or Waikato District Council to satisfy your compliance schedule.
